I observe life
I observe life and from it I derive my present parables. Then, among real people I try which story opens someone’s eyes and allows a new insight in spiritual reality. I watch the reactions, learn, and according to the response I think about how to improve my story to make it even clearer, more understandable…
The quality measure of my story is what happens in the minds of my unbelieving acquaintances!
He paid for the broken window
For example, to the complains that I keep talking about Jesus and His sacrifice, I sometimes say this:
„You know, George, one of my friends had two sons, eight and ten years old. He told them, „Guys, no soccer here in the backyard! Go for it there to the park!
Despite the explicit ban, the boys played in the backyard. The fun was at the very top when they managed to break the window! You see, really hot; the ball flew in through both glasses. Shards everywhere…
The window was not fixed by stopping playing. Even praying didn’t help the window. Someone had to come, drop the window down, take it to the glazier, and then especially pay for it all. The boys themselves had no way to fix it, nor did they have money to have it fixed. Someone ‚bigger‘ had to come, take care and pay for it.
And that’s exactly what Jesus did. The Bible says that Jesus never committed, said, or intended anything wrong, yet he was “identified with our sin” (2 Corinthians 5:21) – with all the bad things we humans have done. He just repaired and paid for the window we broke. Only with his sacrifice comes room for God’s true forgiveness and for our renewed relationship with Him. Does it make sense?“
My Georges sometimes have their controversies about this. But it doesn’t matter! Their controversies only confirm to me that they are thinking about my image. I like it when they return to my story in a week and they tell me what kind of inadequacy they found in it. For me, this means they struggled with the image internally, even though I was long gone.
Doctor’s car-crash
Especially people from religious backgrounds have the idea that if they do one good deed for one evil deed, everything will be fine before God. All the more so when they have accumulated more good deeds. To this I tell my parable:
„Listen, George, imagine a doctor who knocks a man off at a bus stop while driving a car drunk. For personal injury, of course, he will end up in court. After hearing witnesses and experts, he gets the floor and says: ‚Ladies and gentlemen, I have saved thousands of people during my medical practice! If you release me now, I’ll save thousands more! If I go to prison for one injured man, it will not help anyone…‘
He might escape of our court conditionally. But if the alcohol was behind the wheel more than once, I doubt it.
You see, George, even in front of our courts a thousand of good deeds is not an excuse for one bad thing, let alone before God! Does it make sense? Each of our deeds is judged separately.“
Just two small examples of contemporary images I use with my friends who do not yet know Jesus personally.

Lord Jesus, thank you for your strong parables, we are still thinking about today…
